The cost of discipleship

18 Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.”  –John 21:18

Jesus said this to Peter to indicate the kind of death by which Peter as a shepherd would glorify God as he too will lay down his life for the sheep.

In many ways this reminds us that the life of discipleship is not easy, is a call to endure suffering and to be an image-bearer of Christ even when everything seems senseless. In times like this, our job is not to do everything, our job is to do the particular things that we’re called to do – the things that right now give hope to the world by fulfilling the greatest commandment as stated in Matthew 22:36-40.

I believe as we do that with all wholeheartedly we can be assured that: “We have an anchor that keeps the soul. Steadfast and sure while the billows roll, Fastened to the Rock which cannot move, Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.”
